Cafe Riffelmacher, Bamberg (DE)

I came across Cafe Riffelmacher years ago, upon one of my first visits to the beautiful city of Bamberg in Northern Bavaria and I was directly attracted by the unusual flavours of ice cream they sold: lavender, Japanese rice, apple-cinammon, plum, poppyseed, caipirinha, chili-chocolate…

On their website they pride themselves for making ice cream with high-quality ingredients and innovative ideas. Two “flavours of the month” I distinctly remember trying at Cafe Riffelmacher illustrate well their creativity: upon my very first visit I got to try delicious banana-curry ice cream! Although that was a long time ago, I remember loving it and thinking the balance of flavours was just right.

One of the other memorable flavours of the month I tried was asparagus ice cream! 🙂 It was interesting to try and well-made but I probably wouldn’t choose it again. Let’s say it was a once in a lifetime experience!

Cafe Riffelmacher is ideally located at the entrances of Bamberg’s Old Town (which is listed UNESCO World Heritage Site), very close to the Old Town Hall.

Bamberg: one of Germany’s prettiest cities?!

Bamberg is one of my favourite cities in Germany! If you’ve never been there, you should definitely visit it. Not only is the medieval layout of the city is well-preserved, but Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque architecture styles are also visible.

Bamberg is well-known for its Schlenkerla smoked beer: the smoked taste is achieved by exposing the malt to the intense, aromatic smoke of burning beech-wood logs. It’s worth trying at least once! Although this might be the best known beer from Bamberg, Bamberg and its surrounding region apparently have the world’s highest density of breweries: around 300 different sorts of beers are produced around Bamberg!

Other Bavarian cities you should visit

If you actually do take my word for it and set-off to visit Bamberg, you should consider visiting some other nice places in Bavaria too, such as: Regensburg, Passau, Würzburg, Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Füssen… I can’t give you any ice cream recommendations for any of them, but I really enjoyed visiting them!
